St Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town, has a plethora of historic buildings as well as being the home of the world-famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club. We think this view of St Andrews Castle from the south east is magnificent. Dating back to the 13th century the castle was the seat of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews and was at the centre of religious life in Scotland from Medieval times until the Reformation. Anglo-Scots conflicts were fought out here to gain control of the castle. Eventually destroyed during the Reformation the castle now lies in ruins on the rocky Fife coastline. An excellent visitor centre displays exhibits about the castle and visitors can also explore the mines and the infamous bottle dungeon.
