St Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town, has a plethora of historic buildings as well as being the home of the world-famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club. The town takes its name from the Apostle whose relics, according to legend, were brought here in the 4th century by St Rule who travelled here after having a vision, in which an angel told him to carry five of the saint's bones to the western edge of the world. St Andrews beach is within easy reach of the town and the 2 mile expanse of soft powdery sand and sea offers excellent opportunities for walking, swimming, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
