Situated just a couple of miles east of Glenrothes, in the Kingdom of Fife, and perched above the River Leven, Balgonie Castle is a fine example of a romantic 14th century castle. The first documented lairds were the Sibbalds. The oldest part of the castle, the Great Tower, was built for the King's Treasurer, Sir Thomas Sibbald of Balgonie, and is reputed to be one of the oldest standing towers in Scotland. The castle has welcomed a number of famous guests including James IV, Mary Queen of Scots, Rob Roy and Daniel Defoe. In 1716 the castle was seized and set on fire by Rob Roy MacGregor and his clansmen. Many parts of the castle have been sympathetically restored by the present Laird and friendly and informative tours by the Laird or a member of his family are regular occurances.
