The charming seaside town of North Berwick in East Lothian became a fashionable holiday destination in the 19th century mainly due to its two lovely sandy bays. However, the town still attracts holiday makers to this day keen to enjoy the bracing sea air, play the challenging golf courses, walk the spectacular coastal paths, explore the historic ruins and picnic on the beautiful sandy beaches. Visitors can learn more about the seabird colonies who live on the nearby Bass Rock and Fidra Island by visiting the Scottish Seabird Centre which is located in the town. Robert Louis Stevenson spent many childhood holidays here and returned to holiday here as a young man. Fidra Island is said to be the original inspiration for "Treasure Island" and much of his novel "Catriona" (the sequel to "Kidnapped") is based in this area.
