Dirleton Castle, stands proudly on a jagged outcrop, 2 miles west of North Berwick in East Lothian. It's a romantic 13th century ruin set in a truly magnificent garden which is home to the world's longest herbaceous border. During the Wars of Independence the castle transferred many times from Scots to English occupation. Finally in 1314 after the Battle of Bannockburn, Robert the Bruce, ordered for the castle to be decimated to avert the English gaining control of it in the future. Dirleton is one of Scotland's finest castles and a fascinating place to explore.
