Loch Awe in Argyll is the longest stretch of fresh water in Scotland spanning more than 25 miles through some of the country's most spectacular scenery. According to legend the loch was created by a witch and inhabited by a monster even more fearsome than the one at Loch Ness. The north part of the loch is dotted with several islands, each with its own picturesque ruined castle. This is an area rich in history and was the stronghold of the powerful Clan Campbell in the days of the clans. In 1308 the Battle of the Pass of Brander took place downstream from the loch where Robert the Bruce defeated the Clan MacDougall. The loch is famous for its wild and brown trout and attracts fishing enthusiasts, both novice and experienced.
